Long may it wave.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Most flags are made of fabric, and now a flag STAMP from Canada is, too.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag, and to celebrate, Canada Post
has issued both a normal stamp and a special version for collectors. It’s a souvenir
sheet — which is a special issue for collectors, usually in a larger format.

This one is printed with special ink on a satin rayon fabric, the first cloth stamp ever
from Canada, probably one of the few in the world. Its denomination is five dollars, and,
while it’s self-adhesive and COULD be used on the mail, it’s unlikely you’ll see it on
anything except packages from a stamp collector.

Canada Post also is selling a thousand special editions signed by the seamstress of the
original flag back in 1965.

The adoption of the Maple Leaf flag was part of Canada’s emergence from the shadow of
the United Kingdom. It replaced Britain’s Union Jack.
