Error Stamp Outdoes Estimate

The Missing Virgin stamp, an 1867 Virgin Islands one-shilling stamp with the figure of the Virgin omitted, realized £78,200 or $140,760, or well above the estimate of £60,000-70,000.

According to a press release from Spink auctioneers, 90% of the lots offered in Part IV of the Edward M. Gilbert Collection were sold.

"An outstanding result with bidding from collectors worldwide reflecting the continued demand for stamps of quality and rarity," said Richard Watkins, Director of the Spink Stamp Department.
