June 27-28, 1998:

A rate hike means new stamps

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

The Postal Service's Board of Governors meets Monday and
Tuesday, and one of the items on the agenda may be whether
to increase postage rates. The Postal Rate Commission made
its recommendations about a month-and-a-half ago...the
Governors can accept them, reject them, modify them with
a unanimous vote, or put them off again.

The Commission granted a one-cent increase for letters,
denied a penny extra for postcards, and similarly agreed
and disagreed with other rates. It also recommended the
Postal Service wait until January for an increase.

If the Postal Service decides to raise rates -- and it did
ask for an increase, after all -- that will mean new
stamps.

We're hearing the new temporary stamps will have the
letter H and Uncle Sam's HAT and the next flag stamp will
show the front of a classroom and a flag above the
blackboard.

Of course, 32-cent commemorative stamps issued just before
he rate change won't see much use. That'll upset those who
pushed for those subjects and causes.

And that's stamp collecting this week.
