Busy summer!

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

This summer the U-S is issuing 39 stamps and a postcard. Actually, if you take into account
different formats, it’s 43 stamps and two postcards. The subjects include art, sharks,
flowers and the former head of the University of Notre Dame.

A week before the summer solstice, there were eight other stamps, showing different types
of balls used in sports.

Wow! That’s an awful lot of stamps — as many as some countries issue in an entire year.

It’s actually as many as the U-S used to issue in an entire year.

Summer was once the slow period for stamp collecting. The hot sticky weather wasn’t good for
stamps, and postal officials would go away on vacation. Air conditioning and self-adhesive
stamps took care of the weather… and some of this summer’s stamps were tied to events or
places that people visit on vacation. The Postal Service likes tie-ins.

There isn’t much on the U-S stamp schedule this fall. Maybe collectors can relax.

Or maybe those stamps just haven’t been announced yet!

I’m Lloyd de Vries of The Virtual Stamp Club. For more on stamps and stamp collecting, and
