The general in charge.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Retired Army general Mick Zais is now president of the American Philatelic Society, the
umbrella group for stamp collectors in the U-S. And a highlight of his first six months
was the opening of the new American Philatelic Research Library.

"What a beautiful facility. We are so proud of that, not only the facility, but the
services that we're able to provide to our members." RUNS :10

Zais has been doing a lot of traveling to stamp collecting events, and is amazed at how
friendly everyone is.

"People who are stamp and postal history collectors share a common bond and a shared
interest that builds immediate rapport with people wherever you are, and that's been
really fun to experience." RUNS :11

After West Point, Zais moved around a lot in his 31-year Army career, and he says that's
helping him as A-P-S president.

"What you learn is how to get along with all different kinds of people from all walks of
life, from soldiers who didn't finish high school to Rhodes Scholars in uniform."
RUNS :10

After the Army, Zais served as president of a college and South Carolina's Superintendent
of Education. He's already working on realizing one of his goals as A-P-S president.

"I want to continue the cooperation across the different aspects of philately to grow the
hobby, not one particular branch or aspect, but the entire hobby." RUNS :10
