Sell-outs!

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

We’re seeing signs of speculators swooping in and buying up new stamps and related
products. They then show up quickly elsewhere for sale at several times the original
price.

A U-S product called “no-die-cut” press sheets — the way the stamps come off the
printing press without separations — is selling out almost as soon as they’re put on
sale — sometimes before. Some collectors are haunting the U-S-P-S-dot-com website,
waiting for these press sheets to be listed… and then immediately ordering as many as
they can. The Postal Service put a limit on the number you can buy… but with online
sales, there are ways around that.

Canada each year issues two Lunar New Year stamps. This year, the international rate
stamp, with all its stamp collecting products, was sold out within days of going on
sale. That’s because these items had been available on the website for “pre-orders”
for several weeks.

Those are just two examples.

But the question begs: If stamp collecting is dying out… who’s buying these things?

As Mark Twain said, Rumors of our demise...may be premature.
