The Return of Elvis

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Elvis may have left the building, but he’s returning to your post office, because...

MUSIC: “Well it’s one for the money, two for the show....” UP FULL FOR :03 then under

Presley will be one of this year’s Music Icons stamps, on sale in mid-August. The official
announcement wasn’t a surprise — the King of Rock ‘n Roll was on the list of upcoming
stamps leaked 18 months ago.

And the U-S Postal Service believes the 1993 Elvis Presley stamp was its biggest seller
ever. More importantly, many buyers never used the stamps to mail letters, but kept them,
increasing the profit.

Today, many of those sheets of stamps put away by non-collectors have been dumped... and
if you look in the right places, you can buy that 29-cent Elvis stamp for... 29 cents,
sometimes even less... and if you wish, use it for postage. But the huge amounts put away
for 22 years amounted to an interest-free loan.

Either way, the last Elvis Presley stamp was a financial windfall for the Postal
Service.... so it’s no surprise the cash-strapped agency will do it again.
