Remembering another country's great leader.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

February is black history month, not only here in the U-S, but also in Canada. And the
postal agency there, Canada Post, just issued a stamp commemorating South African leader
Nelson Mandela.

There's no obvious anniversary: He died just over a year ago... and his birthday was in
July.

But the press release says Mandela had a special affinity for Canada, and on his third
visit there, in 2001, he was made an honorary Canadian citizen -- the first time the
honor was bestowed on a living person.

The stamp features a close-up photo of Mandela, taken during his FIRST visit to Canada
11 years earlier, by famed Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh. And the stamp was first
announced to the public at a school in Toronto that’s named after him.

The head of Canada Post says its stamp program seeks to tell stories of people who have
had a powerful effect on society... and Mandela's story is among the most powerful.
