The Human Condition

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

When the Janis Joplin stamp in the U-S Music Icons series was announced recently, many
people asked, “Can a Jimi Hendrix stamp be far behind?” After all, they were both
rock ‘n rollers and stars of the 1969 Woodstock festival, and they died less than a month
apart.

And, indeed, there WILL be a Hendrix stamp. In fact, it will be issued before the Joplin
stamp, on March 13th. No date has been set yet for Joplin.

Also inevitable were the questions about whether the U-S should be honoring with stamps
people who died from the use of illegal drugs.

But it’s not anywhere near the uproar over the Elvis Presley stamp more than 20 years
ago. He also died from drug abuse.

Elvis was a bigger star and cultural icon than Janis Joplin or Jimi Hendrix, so why
more protests then than now?

In the past 21 years, we’ve seen peccadillos by so many celebrities and leaders, from
performance enhancing drugs in baseball to sex acts in the Oval Office. Perhaps we’ve
become jaded.

Or more forgiving. After all, no one is perfect.
