Tough Assignment

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

A well-known stamp collector has been chosen to lead the group that advises the
U.S. Postal Service on stamp subjects and designs, the Citizens Stamp Advisory
Committee. Janet Klug is a former president of the American Philatelic Society — the
umbrella organization for stamp collectors in this country — and she writes regularly
about stamps. She’s also the author of several books about stamp collecting for the
general public, and she judges exhibits of rare stamps at shows.

It’s the first time in recent years that a stamp collector has led C-SAC, as it’s
called. Most of its members are NOT stamp collectors.

Klug takes the reins after a very turbulent year. Minutes of a C-SAC meeting leaked to
a hobby newspaper revealed discord within the committee, high absenteeism and a sharp
turn to the commercial for U-S stamps. Then, committee members complained to the
Postmaster General that they were not being consulted or even informed about new stamps.

Although Klug has credentials as a serious philatelist, she also has championed the
"fun" aspects of stamp collecting. Hopefully, she’ll be able to do both again…as
C-SAC chair.
