Diamond Jubilee

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

[Music: "Crown Imperial" — establish and under]

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth
the Second. Other countries in the British Commonwealth have already issued or
announced stamps to mark the occasion, but up until now, Britain itself has been
silent.

Then Royal Mail announced a surprise issue, six different portraits of Elizabeth,
including a brand-new one, the first the postal agency has ever commissioned of its
monarch.

The stamps were announced and put on sale the same day, but they really weren’t that
much of a surprise. Royal Mail has issued stamps for her 50th year on the throne, the
50th anniversary of her coronation, her 80th birthday, and more.

Because the first postage stamp was issued in Britain, it is the only country that is
NOT required to put its name on its stamps. Instead, there’s just a small silhouette
of Queen Elizabeth. But these six stamps won’t even need that …because, after all,
they feature her portrait.
