Surprise hit.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

The Postal Service this year is giving us dogs, entertainers, landscapes and even some
history…. But the biggest surprise is Cherry Blossoms.

MUSIC: "They were popular" :01

The issue is selling at the rate of a million stamps a day.

Technically, it IS a HISTORY stamp: This year marks the centennial of Japan giving the
trees to the U-S, which then planted them around the Tidal Basin in Washington.

But that's probably not why these two stamps are selling out in many post offices – it's
because they're PRETTY.

The Postal People involved in producing stamps tell us the public is always asking for
pretty stamps.

The pair forms a single picture. On the left, a scene from a hundred years ago with the
Washington Monument, and on the right, one from today, with the Jefferson Memorial. That
one even features a woman taking a picture with a cell phone.

It doesn't hurt that these stamps were released just as Spring began.... helping make them

MUSIC: "Pop-u-lar" + fade
