The Majestic Magenta.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

You may have heard on the news recently that John du Pont, one of the dozens of
heirs to the du Pont chemical fortune, died in prison. He was serving time for
the murder of an Olympic wrestler and coach after he was found guilty but mentally
ill.

What you DIDN'T hear is that du Pont owned one of the world's rarest stamps, an
1856 one-cent magenta stamp from British Guiana. He paid 935-thousand dollars for
it 30 years ago.

He showed it at a major stamp show in 1986, and 10 years later murdered Dave
Schultz. The Magenta hasn't been seen since. The question now is....what's going
to happen to the stamp?

Du Pont was married briefly ― just 90 days ― and had no children, so
it's unclear who is heirs are.

And it's unclear what will happen to the stamp. Will it go on the market? On
display? Does du Pont's will give it to a non-profit stamp collecting society?

Stay tuned.

And that's stamp collecting this week. I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
