Practice Prudence

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

You know what they say about a deal that looks too good to be true? There are some items
on eBay like that -- valuable stamps at unbelievable prices.

There are minute differences in old stamps that can mean hundreds, even thousands of
dollars of difference in value. Sometimes only an expert can tell the difference, and not
from a picture on the Internet.

The Net is also a haven for fakery. Crooks have been re-gumming and trimming stamps for
decades, making good stamps appear to be great ones....but it's easier than ever to sell
them online.

One tell-tale sign is a bargain price. Another is if the seller doesn't tell you his real
name or cite the stamp collecting organizations he belongs to.

The seller also should let you submit the stamp to a panel of experts -- what's called an
"expertizing service" -- with a money-back guarantee if it's not what was promised.

And if all this seems too complicated, maybe you shouldn't be buying expensive stamps.
