Pop! Goes the Culture

The Stamp Collecting Report. I'm Lloyd de Vries.

"D'Oh!" RUNS :01

It appears the U-S will issue stamps next year honoring The Simpsons, the popular animated
T-V series now in its 20th season.

Linn's Stamp News says, however, it doesn't yet know how many stamps or when they'll be
issued.

The Postal Service will neither confirm nor deny the Simpsons stamps.

We DO know that the U-S next year is issuing 20 stamps honoring early television shows,
everything from Howdy Doody to The Twilight Zone.

There will also be stamps for Gary Cooper and Bob Hope.

Pop culture gets a lot of attention from the press.

Last year, the Postal Service issued Star Wars stamps with a lot of hoopla. But they didn't
sell that well, at least not for stamp dealers..

But while there's no evidence Luke Skywalker ever collected stamps, we know Bart Simpson
does.

"The burglar even took my stamp collection."
"YOU? Had a stamp collection?" (raucous laughter)
RUNS :07

Turnabout is fair play, I guess. When Fox Broadcasting first asked for a Simpsons stamps in
1994, the Postal Service scoffed...saying that would be too much like a commercial
endorsement.
