The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

When Peter Mastrangelo was hired as executive director of the American Philatelic Society,
that nation's major stamp collecting organization, it was for his management skills, not
his stamp savvy.

"I collected a little bit when I was a kid. When I was a kid, I collected Lincoln on stamps."

But working with all those stamp collectors rekindled his interest -- and expanded it.

"I also picked up some collections that my father had, and I've become very interested in
collecting and finishing up some collections on AMG Trieste Zone A, and then also, Zone B."

After World War Two, the Italian city of Trieste was administered by an Allied Military
Government for seven years.

"First of all, it was the opportunity to finish something my father started. Second, it is
confined enough where I can use that as an opportunity to delve into philatelic research."

Mastrangelo majored in history in college.

"Now I'm rekindling some of the interest that I had in reading about history."

and maybe, some day, he'll exhibit the Trieste collection -- one of the marks of a serious
stamp collector. As he delves further into philately, Mastrangelo remembers something a
past A-P-S president said to him.

"She said, 'You were just a collector and just never even knew it.' So it's not really
surprising to me."
