Doing An End Run

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Most stamp collectors have more than one collection, and often in very different areas
of philately. It's not attention deficit or having too many interests....it's frequently
because they find themselves stymied in adding to a collection: The stamps they need are
too expensive or just not available. Maybe the quality of what's out there isn't good
enough, or they seem to have completed that collection.

So, faced with a roadblock like that, some collectors decide to go off in another
direction for awhile, waiting for the right material to come on the market.

For example, a specialist in early U-S stamps may also collect a subject, such as holidays
on stamps, or another area, such as the postal history of Arkansas or errors.

In many cases, a collector will have one high-powered collection, and several "fun" ones --
inexpensive, informal, easy to add to.

And who knows? Maybe that elusive piece for the main stamp collection suddenly falls in
the collector's lap.

And that's Stamp Collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
