Filling The Void For Youth

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

For 41 years, the Junior Philatelists of America was the organization for young stamp
collectors. It was run, mostly, by teen-aged members, with some help from adult advisors.
But last year, the J-P-A fell apart, lacking of dynamic teen volunteers to keep it
going.

Now, the American Philatelic Society, the major stamp collecting organization in the U-S,
is stepping into the breach with a new division, the Young Stamp Collectors of America.

First to go was the word "philatelists." Most people don't know that it's the fancy word
for "stamp collectors."

Next was the hard-copy newsletter. It's being replaced by one distributed via e-mail. And
there will be online discussions.

"We are having a monthly online chat session. It will be held the first Sunday of each
month."
RUNS :06

Janet Houser will oversee the program.

The group's first in-person meeting will be held in February at a big stamp show
in Atlanta.

And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
