How Much Is That Stamp In The Windows

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

You can find just about any sort of information on the Internet, but not a comprehensive
stamp catalogue. How come?

The major catalogue publishers all have full-time employees, researching not only the
current market values of hundreds of thousands of stamps, but also the variations in
them -- which can often mean a difference of hundreds of dollars in their values.

They're not going to give away that work. And so far, none of the major catalogue
publishers has put together a pay site on the Internet.

Oh, sure, you can find some of the information here and there, either by checking eBay
and dealers' sites or specialized collectors' pages, but you can't be sure how reliable
the information is, or whether it covers all the bases.

Instead, your best and most economical bets are to check the catalogues in your public
library, or buy used copies of them. Or....just take that collection you want to evaluate
to a reputable stamp dealer for an appraisal.

And that's Stamp Collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
