Taking Flight

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Several countries are issuing stamps to mark the hundredth anniversary of
powered flight. The U-S stamp comes out next month, with ceremonies in
Dayton -- the home of the Wright Brothers -- and Kill Devil Hills, North
Carolina, where the feat took place.

But two of the more interesting Powered Flight stamps are already out,
issued by the United Nations last month. One is 23 cents, the other 70, and
they're attached. But these aren't just the ordinary "se-tenant" stamps,
these are "tete-beche" : One of the stamps is rightside-up, and
the other, upside-down. When combined, the two show an entire propeller in
rotation.

The United Nations Postal Administration has been issuing stamps for more
than half a century now, and they ARE good for postage -- but you can only
send mail using them from three places: The United Nations buildings in New
York, Vienna and Geneva.

There's more information on the U-N's Web site, double-u double-u

And that's stamp collecting this week.
