The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Earlier this month, the U-S issued four stamps honoring
distinguished soldiers, one of whom was Alvin York. A few
days after the stamps were issued at the Pentagon, his
hometown of Pall Mall, Tennessee, held a cerermony
honoring him and the new stamp.

Now, in order to buy an Alvin York stamp from the
Postal Service, you also had to buy one each of Audie
Murphy, John Hines and Omar Bradley: The stamps came
only in a block of four.

So, to be helpful, the Sergeant York Patriotic Society
was offering individual stamps, and used scissors or a
knife to cut the stamps out of the sheets. Every stamp
was damaged -- cut too close to the design, making them
unacceptable to stamp collectors.

The Postal Service is encouraging more and more of these
local events for new stamps. If your organization is
involved, contact the American Philatelic Society or a
local stamp group for advice. The A-P-S is at
stamps-dot-org.

And that's stamp collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
