• There's no one else running.
  
  
• He has resisted the urge in recent years to grab some people by their throats and scream at them, "It's a hobby, dammit, and it's supposed to be fun, you idiot!"
  
  
• He has never won an exhibit award higher than a silver bronze.
  
  
• He knows how to work a cassette tape recorder (a useful talent for recording meeting minutes).
  
  
• He bathes daily and is mostly presentable.
  
  
• It gives him something to do during stamp shows.
  
• He feels your pain: His spouse hates stamp collecting, too.
  
  
• He drives a car older and cheaper than yours; you can feel superior to an APS officer.
  
  
• He knows every Trombone joke. ("What do you call a trombonist with a beeper?" "An optimist." "What do you call an APS director who expects to make everyone happy?" "A trombonist with a beeper.")
  
  
• He has a sense of humor. (?)
