Club History: The Joplin Stamp Club was founded in 1933 and originally met in the Joplin YMCA building. The Club sponsored a five-minute radio program in the mid 1930s on a local station. Membership peaked at 80 just prior to World War II. The Club suspended operations during the War, reforming in 1946. It has continuously operated since that time. Annual shows were sponsored by the Club from 1950 through 1956, and from 1983 to the present. Membership has fluctuated from as few as four as the local club experienced the ups and downs associated with stamp collecting. A vigorous recruitment effort began in 2001 and the current membership stands at 49, the most since before World War II.
Activities of the Joplin Stamp Club:
- An 10 page newsletter, The Perf Gauge, is published monthly. The Perf Gauge has won a Vermeil Award for 2001 through 2004 in the APS Chapter Newsletter Contest.
- An annual show is sponsored. It is held the first weekend in October each year at the Memorial Hall in Carthage, Missouri. An average of 12-15 dealers are present. It is the largest stamp show in the area.
- Saturday Morning Special" meetings are held twice a year to allow attendance by members unable to attend the regular meetings."
- A "Members Only Bourse" is held the first Thursday of each May. Members get to be a dealer for a night. A portion of the sale proceeds goes to the club treasury.
- One or two auctions are held each year. A portion of the proceeds goes to the club treasury.
- A popular "Ice Cream Social" is held annually on the third Thursday of August
