IPHS was organized in 1951 and is incorporated in the state of Iowa as a non profit corporation.

It was organized to collect and preserve postal history information of Iowa and of covers postmarked from or sent to its past, or present post offices, and to share the knowledge of individual research through its quarterly publication referred to as the "Bulletin", and further, to exchange covers on an equitable basis, mostly via scheduled auctions. These auctions are advertised by direct mail of actual auction catalogs to the membership. Auction schedules vary by the amount of material available to justify holding an auction.

Membership is currently $16.00 per year. The Society's fiscal year begins May 1 and ends April 30 of each year.
